MONOTYPE - Constructing the designs, Minority

INITIAL IDEAS

Colour

Why orange and black - The small proportion of orange to black represents the a minority. The contrasting orange and black were used to as black symbolises

The main intention was to experiment with how shapes from Tamil typography can be used to display how Tamil is a minority culture but like all minority cultures should be noticed, protected and appreciated

These designs were built through observation of the shape of Tamil words, letters and recreating them with more symmetrical, simple and contrasting shapes and lines. Through asking a Tamil speaker, it was confirmed that most of the designs were legible, however the intention was not based on creating a new Tamil font and more based on developing designs that are visually pleasing. letterforms are legible

Minority Letterforms

This idea then developed into using ‘minority’ English letterforms. This meaning, the least used letters in the alphabet (z,j,x,q). These experimental type outcomes were kept minimal and abstract to demonstrate the abstract perceptions of outsiders into minority cultures.

DEVELOPEMENT

Combining Western and Eastern Letterforms :

Shown in g, 11, 12, 16, 17, 18. An initial idea was to explore into the western and eastern relation- ship Tamil culture has. This was because the Tamil speaker used within the research of this project had moved to the UK and discussed this relationship of being a Tamil minority in a western society. There- fore, an initial idea was to combine the broken down shapes from Tamil letterforms with English letter- forms.
