OUDG505 - Ethnics and sustainability in Graphic Design.

Ethnics

Moral principles that govern a person’s behaviour

Think about every decision we make

Do you think ethics is important in graphic design? Why?

Yes, it can influence people’s actions and thoughts.

What defines good in graphic design?

What does ethical practice entail in graphic design – what principles?

We have a voice, that voice means something and we should use it appropriately.

Themes:

Being a good citizen

Who to work for

Influence and persuasion

Aesthetics and ethics

Value and purpose – Social responsibility

Books

Ethics in graphic design process – Roberts 2007

Steven Heller – citizen designer 2003

“good design is good citizenship”

“A designer must be professionally, culturally and socially responsible for the impact his or her design has on the citizenry”

Katherine McCoy – experimental typography

A.C. Grayling – self and aesthetics

Jacqueline Roach

Creative value – Richard Holloway

What’s the difference between instrumental and intrinsic good? An instrumental good is something that is good for something else

Is good design about pleasing your client?

Electronic communications has now almost destroyed distance and time, so that we have little excess for not being aware of the worlds…

Why do people pick unethical design?

Is it popular?
Without knowing?
Cheap?

Making people want to buy ethically

Making cheap design ethical design

Designing for a different audience

What is the potential of ethical design?

First things first manifesto - do this don' t do this approach.
heavy critiqued as it is too pinned down
shouldn't be taken directions
the philospohy of ethics - questions what good means as a position of a graphic designer

AIGA - The designers responsibility to audience members and users

- the problem with this is it becomes difficult to follow
- unrealistic at some times

Sustainability

It’s not just green

Environmental – damage to the planet
Social – developing sustainability between people in a way that works and is respected
Economic – allows for the right amount of growth in the market

To be sustainable is to be all three
Practical and achievable

How does sustainability relate to ethics?
What is the relationship?

It’s about looking forward into the future
Being good.
A part of ethics

Sustainably is more specific and relates more directly towards function
When engaging with any particular project considering approaches and ideas change between projects therefore factoring sustainability changes too. E.g. packaging will have more attention than other projects perhaps.

Eric Benson

Beginning
Is this the best way to communicate the message?
What is the impact of changing this piece?
How can we lessen the impact if we print the piece?

Initial
Respect and care for the community
Improve the quality of life
Converse earth vitality and diversity
Minimise the depletion of non-renewable resources
Change personal attitudes and practices to keep with the planets carrying capacity

Recycling in the UK is massively lower than in other places
Thinking about biodegradable materials

Can you use your creativity to influence a change of attitude

Conscious design decisions
Design for re-use/ design for longevity
Design cynically, not linearly
Chose recycled/nontoxic materials
Minimise waste
Minimise ink coverage
Chose venders that use renewable energy and employ socially, equitable and environmentally friendly business practices
Educate consumers about the lifecycle issues through messaging/ marketing
Encourage others to design sustainability

Using your voice to educate – in terms of where things end up

How practical and achievable do you think this is?

Can communications change the world?

Examples of Sustainable Design Companies
