Working in Capitals
I’ll adapt the font Bodoni as the thin and narrow letters are a good starting
point for a cynical typeface. I’ll be experimenting with making the crossbars
and cross strokes of the letters very low as well as the loop. To give it a
greedy personality, I’m also considering shrinking the counters or even
blocking out the counters completely. Another idea is to look at the type on
money and incorporate aspects of it into my typeface e.g. the texture, style of
serifs or thickness. By keeping the top and baseline off all the letters the
same, as a whole the type will appear to look like a blocked out straight line,
this could give the typeface a narrow minded, closed personality.
Still
starting with Bodoni but working in lower case, I’ll be focusing on making my
letters seem untrustworthy and bitter, by making the letters narrow and thin
with slightly staggered baseline and slanted crossbars. Unlike idea no.1 the
uniformity of this font would seem more broken up and hand drawn. Another idea
was to experiment with watercolours to create a ‘bleeding’ effect to suggest
exploitation. Also a fading fill that makes up the letters might give an
unsettling darkness to it. Both typefaces would be mainly used for display or
protest.
Thickness
and weight within each letter will be uneven too
With sharp
edges to give it a cutting visual.
