In terms of names, we decided upon
'shaped'. Taken directly from wording in the brief, ‘Shaped’ refers to events
and happenings within Leeds that have made Leeds and essentially shaped Leeds.
As a group we experimented with
triangles, circles and squares to develop a logo, a variety of different arrangements,
colours and typefaces using these shapes came about. Placing the name within
the shapes and replacing letters with shapes were initial ideas to develop. Initially we used primary
colours for the shapes in replacement of the letter 'a', this was successful
well when it was a triangle. Whereas other shapes made reading the worded ‘shaped’
difficult as the shapes distorted the shape of the letters. E.g. Using a circle
made the worded appear as “shoped’.
Using
black shapes with white a type gave off a dramatic impact compared to other
designs, however through group discussion it was argued this design was not
celebratory enough or representative of traditional print and therefore not
suitable for the exhibition.
An initial idea was to make a swatch of colours
from Leeds collage of art and use it for the branding identity. This idea was disregarded
due to it having a childish personality but most importantly because the
exhibition reflects Leeds as a community in that it celebrates all different
groups of people, therefore colours that resemble Leeds collage of art could be
argued as creating a separation.
A
sans serif typeface was used as it is more contemporary and easily read than a
serif typeface. ‘Our city’ was a developed as something that could be placed
before the title of the exhibition ‘shaped’ in certain publications as it gives
more insight into what ‘shaped’ is about.
