Design For Screen - Brief

The brief: Create an immersive and engaging screen based user experience for a media of your choice, this could include; website, app, streaming service, etc.
Before undertaking this brief you should identify the following;
_ The client
_ The problem
_ The target audience
_ The overarching aim of the project (what are you trying to achieve)
The role of the communications: Deliver a world class digital experience that engages the audience, how can you maximise the potential of digital devices?Considerations: Must be global — Digital formats are viewed on a global scale, this must inform your approach and design decisions.
Use mixed media — A combination of image, audio and video should be considered in your design strategy.

Navigation

Although there are pages numbers and a content. I added the name of each DJ that was being interviewed in order to allow readers to navigate through the book easier

An initial idea was to have a watermark along the side, but this gave the book too much of a corporate look.

Having a strip at the bottom of the page worked as it also gave more bank pages a tighter look. From feedback I was told it tied the book together.

Book Binding

Initial Idea
2017 is Dimensions 6th year, therefore when binding using a multiple of 6 for stitching could be considered in order to include this and make reasoning for choosing that binding method.

Coptic Stitch would work for this method. In bookbinding, section (sometimes gathering) refers to a group of bifolios, or sheets of paper, stacked together and folded in half. The term is sometimes used interchangeably with signature, though the latter technically refers only to the signature mark at the bottom of the first page of a printed section.

Perfect Binding - A more refined look

I decided to practice perfect binding for the prototype as it is more commonly used for catalogs, directories and paperback books that have a higher page count and the publication has 70 pages.

The book will lie completely flat when closed - a saddle stitch creates sometimes referred to as a “bow” in the middle. Therefore using perfect bound the finished piece will be aesthetically more pleasing.

Perfect Binding is suited to using a variety of paper weights - This is important in relation to my book as I will be using a variety of paper stock.

Also allows a printable spine.

Drawback - does not lay flat (when opened) You lose design space in the gutter area.

Process

The sheets of the book are gathered together, a glue is applied along the binding edge and the cover of the booklet is placed over and around it.The cover is wrapped around the glued pages, and the brochure or catalog is then trimmed to its finished size.  A book can be perfect bound as long as it is 28 pages or larger.  In Perfect Binding, the final page count just needs to be a multiple of 2.
