As the abstract designs for this project were popular, the project expanded into transferring designs into jewellery pieces. Through making small changes in the thickness of strokes, I collaborated with a jelwery maker to print the designs onto copper and silver. Expanding the project towards other outcomes such as posters and jewellery only brings more attention to the beauty of a minority:
The process
Through conversations with technicians it was informed of a technique me called intaglio etching , which is a chemical reaction witch engraves the design into a metal.
The process consisted of lots of stages :
Image
Black and white negative image
Scan onto aesthete
get piece of metal – I chose copper
apply special film over copper
expose the image on to the copper
peal of layer of film
put in warm water
add two cups of developer
put in chemical bath for 2 hours
back into walm water
sand
shine
Drill holes
Make into jewellery pieces.
Once the designs were completed as pieces in metal, we talked about how my designs could work in plastic. Both of us were keen to see how the design would work in plastic as both earing and pendants.
I thought about logistic of how this could work, what plastic to use, and what process would give the best effect .
The designs had be simplified to bolder shapes.
Process :
Make designs on illustrator
Lazar cut design in all three colour
Place piece in design wanted using the different colour pieces
Two different methods were tested :
Method 1 :
Heat press:
Place the piece as you want them to be as one,
To insure they don’t move and lose shape in the heat press cut wooden frames for the plastic to sit in.
Place in heat press for up to 2 hours
The effects :
The piece stuck together well , but in the heat press they lost the sharpness of design and shapes. The colour blended into one another to much, I was unhappy with this effect and was unsure on how to prevent using the heat press .
Method 2 :
Plastic Soldering :
Plastic soldering is a chemical reaction in which combines two flush piece of plastic together as one.
Place the piece as you want them to be as one,
Use chemicals in syringe
Place the liquid chemical were the two plastic piece meet
