MONOTYPE PROJECT - Production

MONOTYPE PROJECT - Production

A practice book was made to test signatures, Coptic stitch and paper stock for the cover. In the process a hardback cover was tested. The front and back design was printed onto canvas paper. This had not yet been tested by technicians and therefore was an experiment. As the canvas paper was thicker than the usual material for hardback covers, folding corners was more difficult. This resulted in a messy finish which took away from the clean, minimal aesthetic of the book. Because if this, the final cover uses Matt 300 gsm.

Portrait tag was also tested. This paper stock was not used as it easily picked up scratches and marks. Black ink on Matt  paper also picked up marks easily when book binding but from feedback it was highlighted that these were problems that would not occur in professional book making industry.

Book Binding Design Problem

Printing dense black ink onto portrait-rag paper-stock, caused design problems when book binding. When folding the paper, the crease wore away the ink and created an untidy finish. The black ink also became very dirty easily. The whole book is very clean-cut and tidy and therefore this effect stood out, taking away from the final design. Although if this book were to be made in a professional printers and book binding studio, these design problems would not occur. However, it strongly effected the aesthetic of the final design so it was taken on board to resolve.

Three different approaches were tested:

1.     Using a specialist printer to print white ink onto black paper.
-       The outcome prevented the white rubbed off ink effect, however colours printed onto the paper were weakened.
2.     Leaving a white gap were the page would be creased
3.     Using a different paper-stock and changing the design to having a white background.

Production

The final publication has a Coptic stitch bind, as this bind has allows pages to open up full and flat allowing the work to feel open and each artwork presented without disruption from neighbouring pages. A Coptic stitch also has an openness to it in comparison to other stitches. This effect supports the publication opening up people’s minds about minority cultures and letting outsiders to Tamil culture in.

Paper stock

Olins regular 200gsm was used for the main pages of the publication. It’s thickness intended to reduce pages being overlooked. Olins regular paper is also the nearest double sided to white, this is important to prevent the bright orange colour used throughout the book having less impact.
